If your gates are in good shape, there's no need to throw them out to get electric gates. Adding motors to the gates you have usually costs a lot less than starting again, and it keeps the look you already like.

Three questions that decide it

Is the gate solid? It needs to be rigid and not twisting or rotting.

Does it move freely? A swing gate should swing without dragging, and a sliding gate should run easily along its track.

Are the hinges and posts strong? A motor puts extra load on both, so weak posts or worn hinges need sorting first.

Wrought iron and steel gates, wooden gates including five-bar and field gates, composite and aluminium gates, and sliding gates, from small single gates to heavy commercial ones. Why conversions need care

Adding a motor turns a manual gate into a machine, and whoever does it is responsible for making it safe. A converted gate has to meet the same rules as a brand-new automatic gate, so every conversion I do gets safety devices, a force test to BS EN 12453 and a Declaration of Conformity. It's the main reason why I don't recommend DIY gate kits.
